The design has a white shell, an adjustable halo strap similar to the original PSVR design, four front-facing cameras for inside-out tracking, and a cable linked to the rear of the halo ring, according to a PlayStation Blog post.
A next-generation VR headset has revealed by Sony for its PlayStation 5 console, releasing some time in 2021. In October 2016, the original PlayStation VR headset released for the PlayStation 4. It was easier to use and proved popular with players, selling 5m by the end of 2020, although less powerful than the PC-powered Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets that arrived the same year.
With a quirky range of games from its studios, including Moss, an adventure game about a small mouse, and Astro Bot Rescue Mission, a cute and innovative platformer featuring the tiny white robots that have become PlayStation mascots, Sony supported the technology. The PSVR also debuted with Tetris Effect, a critically acclaimed, psychedelic VR version of the classic block-stacking puzzle game.
More resolution, more precise head-tracking, and a wider field of view promised by the new VR system. With a single cable, it will connect to the PS5, making it easier to set up and use. A new VR motion controller that will incorporate some extra features of the Dual Sense pad of the PS5 will also come with it.
Since its launch last November, the PlayStation 5 has consistently sold out. According to the company's earnings report, 4.5m consoles sold by the end of last year.
"Once they put on the new headset, players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds," wrote Hideaki Nishino of Sony in the PlayStation Blog announcement.
"Our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever with both the PlayStation VR and the next generation VR system we're building."
