Quartz, Ubisoft's own NFT platform for unique items in AAA games, will run on "energy-efficient technology" that uses "a million times less energy than a bitcoin transaction," according to the company.
Ubisoft is officially getting into NFTs. On Tuesday, the company announced a new platform, Ubisoft Quartz, where it will offer NFTs that it's calling Digits. The company says that each Digit is unique, will track who has owned it over time, and will have its own serial number that can be seen in-game.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint will be the first Ubisoft game to support NFTs, with Quartz available in beta on PC.
These NFTs, dubbed "Digits," will be in-game cosmetic items with a visible unique code. After that, the serial-coded cosmetic can be kept or sold, with the previous owner's information logged.
Quartz will be "energy efficient," according to Ubisoft, because it will use Tezos, a blockchain that claims to use "significantly less energy to operate than Proof-of-Work blockchains like Bitcoin or Ethereum."
Didier Genevois, Ubisoft's blockchain technical director, said, "We chose Tezos because of its original Proof-of-Stake network and its leadership on clean NFTs." "A single transaction on their network consumes the same amount of energy as streaming 30 seconds of video, whereas the previous generation of blockchain networks could consume the same amount of energy as a year of nonstop streaming."
"Each Digit is a one-of-a-kind collectible with its own serial number for others to see in-game," Ubisoft said today. "It also keeps track of its current and previous owners for years to come, making players an integral part of the game's history." "Digits are in-game collectibles of high quality with active utility value. Digits are playable cosmetic items that allow players to customize their experience and complete missions in style.
"Each Digit is accompanied by a certificate of ownership that is stored on blockchain, a decentralized, community-driven technology that gives players more control than ever before. Items are no longer bound to a player's game inventory with Digits because they can be sold on third-party platforms outside of the Ubisoft ecosystem for other eligible players to purchase."
At any given time, players will only be able to own one iteration of each unique cosmetic. You must also be at least 18 years old and Level 5 in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
The first three of these Digit cosmetics will be released for free via the Ubisoft Quartz website on the 9th, 12 and 15th for Breakpoint PC owners.
There's no word on when or where these Quartz NFTs will be seen next.
