Facebook teases ‘Project Cambria’ high-end VR / AR headset

article by Amit caesar

Facebook is working on "Project Cambria," a high-end virtual and augmented reality headset. The device, which was briefly teased during Facebook's Connect keynote, has cameras that transmit high-resolution full-color video to the headset's screens. It's supposed to have innovative features that Facebook can't yet include in the Oculus Quest lineup, but there's no price or exact release date yet — though Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says it'll be a "completely new" product that will be at the "high end of the price spectrum," and that it'll be released next year.

The device will be geared at mixed reality applications and will feature face and eye tracking, as Zuckerberg mentioned earlier this year. It's meant to use sensors and algorithms to rebuild and augment the real environment around you, as well as optics that make it smaller than existing headsets. The accompanying image from the Connect keynote shows a very brief view of what it's meant to look like.

The "Oculus Pro" headset was leaked earlier this week appears to be Project Cambria. It's also theoretically comparable to a high-end Apple mixed reality headset that's been rumored. In mid-October, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed a smartphone with "retina resolution," albeit he labeled it as a prototype. The name follows previous Oculus codename standards that correspond to California regions.–for example, the initial Oculus Quest was revealed as Santa Cruz.
